September 8, 2015

I hope you all enjoyed your mini-breaks for Labor Day, and please (if you haven't done so already) take a moment to reflect on how much work we have had the pleasure of surviving so far...

There is more to come, I am sure of it, but it is always an alleviation to the mind when you realize that your efforts mean something and is not for whatever your perceive as being nothing.

Now that we have shared an inspirational moment, please refer to the text below to stay on track with your schedules and make this week a less stressful one:

HOMEWORK
  • Ortega: none...as a reminder though, Mrs. Ortega would like our English notebooks (not the ones reserved for Senior Project) to be well-kept for the remainder of the year; please take a look at the standard example English notebook she has at her podium if you missed a day or would like to make sure your pages are ordered on-point!
    • DUE: per your discretion
  • Piggott: none (for now)...might want to review your notes on the four methods of preferential voting as there most likely will be a quiz on the material coming up soon
  • Rivas: none
  • Holt: Google Andy Weir/Adam Savage Interview
    • DUE: ASAP (plan for second rotation)
      • finish "The Martian" if you haven't done so already (due: sometime soon, don't be ambushed)
  • Senior Project: Blog #4 will be shared our Friday (9/11/15)

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

- Ortega: We spent around 25 minutes for SSR (have those books at the ready next time you see her) and writing responses to a Quick Write prompt that read, "What are you doing next year? Why did you make that decision? What do you want from your experience?".  Afterwards, we turned in those paragraphs regarding the article (or bit of the article) she read to us last class on Clinton's New College Compact idea to make college for affordable.  Mrs. Ortega then had us write what books we were planning to read on a notecard, asking us to schedule how much time we will take to read the ones on our lists (even if we had none as of now), given how reading is pretty important if you want to write well on those college applications.  Turning in those cards (with our ID numbers in the right corner!), we arranged our notebooks, making a table of contents for them complete with listed assignments we have had to tackle till this point in time.

- Piggott: We went over the discrete mathematics worksheet covering the four methods of preferential voting, and then learned/took notes on the 4 fairness criteria, with examples for each as the cherry on top.  Criteria are as follows:
  1. majority
  2. condorcet
  3. monotonicity
  4. independence of irrelevant alternative
- Rivas: We filled out a note sheet he gave us about Federalist Paper #51 and after a lecture regarding the age of 'certain' people in power and their familiarity with cultural change, Rivas assigned us a 'lil thing' where you had to use common media outlets that our generation uses to advocate the Constitution.  Throughout, we learned about the branches of Congress (yes, tis very chaotic) and then finished our social media page for James Maddison (if only he knew).

- Holt: We presented our experiments on the topic of human reaction rate as recorded with a dropping ruler in response to stimuli we created...subsequently, we walked through the scientific method and overviewed independent, dependent, and control variables

- Senior Project: make it count!

A kind reminder: the weather this week will be well above the 90 degree mark, so dress accordingly and try not to incur any attack from the heat!  Many scientists (with evidence to suffice) believe the year 2015 will be the time when the tangible effects of climate change shall be felt...
